"Traditional" theme parks

Dollywood

Dollywood

One of the main draws of Pigeon Forge, Dollywood is a sure pick for any family looking for a full day of rides and attractions that come with a good dose of local culture. The park is owned in part by Dolly Parton who wanted to give back to her hometown and has helped make the park a unique experience.

Well worth a visit even if you don't like roller coasters or the more thrilling rides.

Note that there are steep discounts for multi-day passes, in case you want to plan on enjoying it in smaller bites over several days.

Outdoor adventure/theme parks

Anakeesta

Anakeesta

A one-of-a-kind kind of family-friendly nature theme park, you start out by going up on a chairlift from downtown Gatlinburg up on the hill. If you prefer more thrilling experiences, you have both their dueling zip lines and mountain coaster. But where they shine is for the more laid-back attractions, focused on letting you enjoy the forest and the views, including the Vista Gardens and the Tree Canopy Trail. For the little ones, there's a children's treehouse and playground, gem mining. There are also some good shopping and eating opportunities.

Foxfire Mountain Adventure Park

Foxfire Mountain Adventure Park

Best known for their excellent zip lines, this 150-acre adventure park opened in 2010 and also has the longest swinging bridge in the country, a ropes course, climbing wall, hiking trails, an ATV tour – and the only craft cidery in Tennessee.

Ober Gatlinburg

Ober Gatlinburg

Ober Gatlinburg on top of Ski Mountain has been around since the '60s, and apart from the skiing, they keep adding attractions to keep visitors coming back all throughout the year. This includes all-year ice skating, the scenic chairlift, a mountain coaster, an Alpine Slide, and opportunities to see the wildlife of the Smokies, as well as restaurants and shopping. In the winter you also have snow tubing and skiing.

You get there either via the aerial tramway from downtown Gatlinburg – an experience in itself, but which can be somewhat pricy – or you can drive up and park (parking is $8 per car, but in high season, make sure you get there early, as parking is limited).

Aquariums

Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies

Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies

You wouldn't expect it up in the mountains, but Gatlinburg has a surprisingly good aquarium. The glass tunnel walkway is a fascinating experience. As it is a bit pricey and can get crowded, we recommend trying to avoid peak hours.

Other museums

Although we can't personally vouch for the educational or entertainment value of any of these, there is a large number of museums in the area. These include:

Museums – with a focus on entertainment

Wonderworks

Wonderworks

A favorite with kids (and many adults too), WonderWorks focuses on discovery via interactive exhibits – experience an earthquake, lie on a bed of nails, make giant soap bubbles, and many more.

Escape rooms

Gatlin's Escape Room Games

Gatlin's Escape Room Games

Gatlin's Escape Rooms have five challenges for you to try. We particularly recommend the Legend of Atlantis, the Haunting of Hyde House, and the Masters of Magic. The Curse of Kraken's Eye is challenging, but is not quite as well-designed. For a more unique experience with local flavor, try the more comic Moonshine Hill Hootenanny.

Mini golf

Hillbilly Golf

Hillbilly Golf

This is a truly unique mini-golf experience, built back in the 70s, that we recommend everyone visiting Gatlinburg to try. You start by going up 300 ft on a lift up the mountainside before making your way down on the course. Beautiful wooded surroundings and a well-maintained course.
